California Attorney General amends lawsuit, seeking to force oil companies to forfeit profits from deceptive climate change practices.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta has amended a lawsuit against major oil companies, including Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Shell, BP, ConocoPhillips, and the American Petroleum Institute, seeking to force them to forfeit profits allegedly made through deceptive practices about climate change. The amended complaint introduces a remedy from California Assembly Bill 1366, allowing the state attorney-general to seek court-ordered forfeiture of profits gained through false advertising and unfair competition. The oil companies are accused of causing tens of billions of dollars in damages and deceiving the public about their role in climate change.
