Opioid giant Mallinckrodt, the largest seller of prescription opioids in the US, was forced to publish over 1.3 million internal documents revealing a carefully coordinated effort to shape medical attitudes towards pain medicine. Researchers Sergio Sismondo and Maud Bernisson analysed nearly 900 contracts that detail strategies such as recruiting physicians as influencers, planting articles in scientific journals, coordinating conference presentations, and developing continuing medical education courses. These tactics were used to reframe concerns about addiction as a phobia and muddle the very concerns that led to growing hesitancy among frontline prescribers.
