Florida's Ninth Judicial Circuit State Attorney's Office has decided to pursue the death penalty for Stephan Sterns, accused of first-degree murder in the death of 13-year-old Madeline Soto. Sterns, the girlfriend's daughter, was reported missing by her mother on February 26 and her body was found in a rural area in Osceola County. The state attorney's office cited evidence found on Sterns' phone as the basis for the decision to seek the death penalty. Sterns is facing 60 charges related to sexual battery for the alleged abuse of Madeline.
