Environmental activist Stephen Kwikiriza in Uganda, who opposes the $5bn East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), has been released after being detained and reportedly beaten by the Ugandan military. The pipeline, which will transport oil from Uganda to Tanzania's coast, has faced opposition from Kwikiriza's organization, the Environment Governance Institute (EGI). The activist is now receiving medical treatment for his injuries.
