Amputee firefighter Simon Hawkins, who joined Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service in 1993, has retired after completing 30 years of service. He suffered severe injuries to his lower left leg in a motorcycle crash in 2004 and was forced to have it amputated. Doctors initially believed he would not return to active duty, but Hawkins overcame the odds and resumed full operational duties in 2006.
