Lake Macquarie City Council has successfully reduced organic waste in household general waste by 43% over six years through its "green bin" strategy. The council has distributed 88 million compostable green bags for residents to dispose of food and organic garden waste, diverting 230,000 tonnes of waste from landfill. This initiative has been effective in reducing greenhouse gas emissions more than recycling.
