1st trans-boundary survey reveals Zimbabwe-Zambia hippo population decline due to droughts and human activities.
The hippo population along the Zambezi River is in decline, revealed in a first trans-boundary survey between Zimbabwe and Zambia conducted by the African Wildlife Foundation. The decline is attributed to droughts and human activities such as poaching. The survey documented 1,424 hippos in Zimbabwe and 1,769 in Zambia, with the Zimbabwean side having more hippopotamus pods.
