Researchers at UC Berkeley used CRISPR/Cas9 to increase photoprotection gene expression in rice, enhancing photosynthesis in food crops.

Researchers at the Innovative Genomics Institute, UC Berkeley, have used CRISPR/Cas9 to increase the expression of a gene involved in photoprotection in rice, enhancing downstream photosynthetic activity. This is the first unbiased gene-editing approach to increase gene expression in food crops. The work, part of the RIPE project, aims to boost food production by developing crops that convert sunlight into food more efficiently.
