Supreme Court of Canada partially upholds media appeal on secret trial in Quebec, orders redacted initial conviction.
The Supreme Court of Canada has partially upheld a media appeal regarding a secret trial in Quebec involving a police informant. The court ruled that the trial judge and Quebec Court of Appeal acted correctly in keeping certain identifying information confidential, such as the nature of the crime, its location, and the judge's name. However, the Supreme Court stated that part of the legal proceedings could have been kept on the court's docket and hearing roll. The court criticized the Court of Appeal's use of the term "secret trial" and ordered the Court of Appeal to produce a redacted version of the initial conviction that both protects the informant's identity and respects the principle of open courts.
