2.1 million English pupils now eligible for free school meals, up 75,000 in a year, with education leaders calling for an income cap increase.

2.1 million pupils in England are now eligible for free school meals, with a 75,000 increase over the last year, according to the Department for Education. The eligibility rate has risen to nearly one in four (24.6%) of pupils. Education sector leaders have urged the government to address child poverty and raise the income cap for free school meals, currently set at £7,400, as the current cap does not reflect current living costs.
