India's TRAI proposes penalties for hoarding unused numbers, harmonizing fixed-line and mobile numbering, and a 10-digit dialing system to address fixed-line scarcity.
India's Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI) has proposed solutions to address fixed-line phone number scarcity, including imposing penalties on telecom operators for hoarding unused numbers and examining the possibility of harmonizing the fixed-line numbering method with the mobile system. TRAI's 'Revision of National Numbering Plan' also considers a shift to a uniform 10-digit dialing system for both fixed-line and mobile services. With 6.28 crore fixed-line numbers allocated and only 2.74 crore in use, TRAI aims to ensure efficient utilization of this critical resource.
