2007-2021 US poison control centers see a 233.9% rise in intentional exposure death calls and increased severity in unintentional exposures.
A new study from the University of Virginia School of Medicine reveals that poison control centers across the US are experiencing an increase in severe cases, with the number of calls about intentional exposures resulting in death rising by 233.9% between 2007 and 2021. The severity of unintentional exposures also increased, with the number resulting in severe harm or death rising by 37.4% and 65.3%, respectively. This spike in serious outcomes occurred even as the total number of calls for unintentional exposures decreased slightly.
