1 in 5 Australian deaths in 2022 were due to heart disease, with coronary heart disease as the most common underlying cause for men and the second for women. Dementia, hypertension, cerebrovascular diseases, and diabetes were also significant contributors to deaths. A new AIHW report revealed 81% of deaths involved more than one cause, and nearly 25% had five or more recorded causes.
