28-year-old Death Valley National Park employee Rigoberto "RJ" Avina died in a single-vehicle accident off-duty on May 26. Avina had been working in the park's maintenance division since September 2021. Vehicle crashes are the leading cause of fatalities in the park, with Superintendent Mike Reynolds expressing condolences, stating, "RJ's passing leaves a hole in our community's heart."
