16-year-old Carl Alesbrook, now 19, is on trial for the murder of four-month-old Elijah Shemwell in Derby Crown Court. The prosecution claims Alesbrook, the baby's mother's partner, caused the baby's death through "abusively" shaking him, resulting in 17 separate injuries. Elijah had been in Alesbrook's care between mid-November 2021 and early January 2022. The defendant denies the charge.
