Vancouver has the highest toxic benzene emissions among 17 North American cities, with gas stoves as primary contributors.
Vancouver tops 17 North American cities in toxic benzene emissions, according to a study published in the journal Environmental Research Letters. Gas stoves in several homes in the city produced the highest toxic benzene emissions, with mean benzene concentrations nearly double that of Los Angeles, Calgary, and Denver, and 50 times higher than Boston, the city with the lowest concentrations. Long-term exposure to benzene has been linked to blood cancers like leukemia.
