Rhode Island has passed a new law prohibiting auto insurers from charging higher rates to policyholders who have been widowed, treating widows or widowers the same as married individuals. The law, signed by Governor Dan McKee, comes into effect with policies issued after January 1, 2025, and aims to prevent insurers from increasing premiums solely based on a policyholder's marital status.
