A key figure at Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, William Smith, has been charged with embezzling $40m over several years. Smith, who was the CFO from 2011, used money from the nonprofit to pay for personal expenses such as travel, hotels, limousines, and credit card bills. The fraud is said to be "simply astonishing in scale" by U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison. Smith has been charged with bank and wire fraud.
