Electricity bills in the U.S. are forecast to rise by 7.9% this summer, reaching an average of $719 from June to September. Extreme heat is driving up cooling costs, with low-income families to be hit hardest due to limited access to affordable summer cooling. The National Energy Assistance Directors Association and Center for Energy Poverty and Climate reported that government funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program has fallen, leaving around 1 million fewer families able to receive support paying their energy bills.
