Posthumously awarded Distinguished Service Cross to Black medic Waverly Woodson Jr. for heroism during D-Day invasion.

Black medic Waverly Woodson Jr., part of the only Black combat unit in D-Day invasion during WWII, is posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his heroism and determination treating troops under heavy enemy fire. This second-highest Army honor is given for extraordinary heroism. Sen. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland has been working for years with Woodson's family to recognize his exploits on D-Day.
