European Commission approves €1.75bn conditional compensation for Germany's coal phase-out.
The European Commission gives conditional approval for the German government to pay up to €1.75bn ($1.9bn) in compensation to coal miner LEAG, as part of the country's coal phase-out plan. The payment will cover mine rehabilitations, closures and job impacts, but a third of the sum will depend on future power and CO2 prices. Germany aims to phase out coal use by 2038.
