Tesco trials laser-etched barcodes on avocado skins to reduce plastic waste in 270 stores.
Tesco is trialling the use of high-powered lasers to etch barcodes onto the skins of some of its avocados, replacing traditional plastic stickers, in an effort to reduce plastic waste. The lasers remove a small layer of the skin to create the barcode for customers to scan at tills, with no impact on the avocado's quality, shelf life, or taste. The trial will take place in 270 Tesco stores in South-East England and may be rolled out further if successful.
