Nigerian Supreme Court orders state governors to defend against federal lawsuit seeking local government autonomy within 7 days.

The Nigerian Supreme Court has ordered state governors to file their defense within seven days in response to a federal government lawsuit seeking full autonomy for the country's 774 local governments. The federal government alleges that governors have mismanaged local government affairs, including unlawful dissolution of elected local government leaders, the establishment of caretaker committees, and the creation of joint accounts for local government funds. The court has set June 13 for further hearings.
