SOM partners with Energy Vault to develop gravity-based energy-storing skyscrapers.
Chicago's Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), known for the Burj Khalifa, partners with Energy Vault Holdings Inc. to develop prototype designs for energy-storing skyscrapers using gravity. Electric motors elevate large blocks, storing potential energy and converting it into electricity. The technology, based on pumped hydroelectric plants, aims to be an alternative to lithium-ion batteries and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from construction materials.
