Kenyan climber Cheruiyot Kirui, attempting to be first African on Everest without oxygen, dies; family chooses to leave body on mountain.
Kenyan climber Cheruiyot Kirui, who aimed to be the first African to ascend Mt. Everest without supplemental oxygen, will have his body left on the mountain after his fatal climb. Kirui's family made the difficult decision to leave his remains following consultations and considering the risks to a rescue team. The family will hold memorial services in Nairobi and Kirui's Chepterit village, foregoing the expensive and risky option of body retrieval.
