11% higher derailment risk for longer freight trains, like the one in East Palestine, based on US freight train accident data (2013-2022).
New research in the journal Risk Analysis reveals that longer freight trains, such as the one that derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, in February 2023, increase the risk of derailment by 11%. A 100-car train was found to be more than twice as likely to experience a derailment compared to a 50-car train. The study used data from US freight train accidents between 2013-2022 from Federal Railroad Administration databases.
