Australia has seized 4,200 litres of butanediol, a dangerous date-rape drug, in Sydney over the past three months. Known as "bute", the drug has been smuggled into the country in beauty products and food items. Since it was made a border-controlled drug in March, authorities have detected a rise in its use in date-rape cases. Importing a commercial quantity of the drug attracts a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
