The Nature Conservancy of Canada purchases 271-hectare land in Skookumchuk Prairie, BC, for a new conservation area, preserving biodiversity and preventing development.
The Nature Conservancy of Canada has purchased a 271-hectare land in southeast British Columbia's Skookumchuk Prairie to establish a new conservation area. The land, which includes wetlands and forests, is crucial for preserving biodiversity and includes nesting grounds for the Long-billed Curlew, as well as being relied upon by elk and deer in the winter. The $3.4 million project received around two-thirds of its funding from private donations, with the remainder coming from the federal government's Natural Heritage Conservation Fund, preventing potential development of the area.
