Indian government begins granting citizenship under CAA in West Bengal, Haryana, and Uttarakhand.

The Indian government has initiated granting citizenship to applicants under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in West Bengal, Haryana, and Uttarakhand, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs. State Empowered Committees have granted citizenship to applicants in these three states. The CAA, enacted by Parliament in December 2019, allows citizenship to individuals from Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi, and Christian communities from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who entered India up to December 31, 2014, due to religious persecution or fear of such persecution.
