Alpacas in Idaho test positive for H5N1 bird flu, linked to circulating dairy cattle viruses.
Alpacas have tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu virus for the first time in the US, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Veterinary Services Laboratories. The animals tested positive were on a farm in Idaho where poultry had previously tested positive for the virus and were culled in May. The gene sequence of the viruses isolated from the alpacas indicates that it is closely related to the H5N1 viruses currently circulating in dairy cattle.
