12-month trial in Western Australia allows women 16-39 to buy oral contraceptives over-the-counter without a prescription.

Western Australia has launched a 12-month trial allowing women aged 16-39 to buy the oral contraceptive pill over the counter at participating pharmacies, without needing a doctor's prescription. Women who have been continuously taking the pill for two years and are deemed safe by the pharmacist, can access a resupply for up to 12 months. Training for pharmacists is available, and the scheme will be rolled out as they are qualified.
