Labour Party data shows that prison and probation staff took the equivalent of over 770 years of mental health sick leave in the year to March 2024. This marks a 148% increase in sick days since 2018, with more than 40% of all sick days now due to mental health issues. The Shadow Justice Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, described the situation as "damning" and pointed to a workforce on the brink.
