41-year-old Robert Hampton, an IT consultant and Liverpool resident, bought a 1978 Merseyrail Class 507 train for £1 from Angel Trains to save it from scrap and preserve it as a local icon. He founded the Class 507 Preservation Society and is raising £10,000 to transport the train to Tanat Valley Light Railway in Shropshire. Queen Elizabeth II used the train during the Merseyrail network's opening ceremony in 1978.
