RMIT engineers create coffee concrete biochar, turning spent coffee grounds into 11-meter footpath panels, to reduce organic waste in landfills in Australia.

RMIT engineers led by Dr. Rajeev Roychand have developed a coffee concrete biochar, turning spent coffee grounds into 11-meter footpath panels. The project aims to reduce organic waste in landfills, as Australia produced 48 million tonnes of organic waste between 2021 and 2022, contributing 13 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. The team collaborated with Macedon Ranges Shire Council to test the biochar in Gisbourne, Victoria.
