Nigeria's Federal Government sues state governors for local government autonomy and prohibition of unilateral dissolution.
Nigeria's Federal Government has filed a lawsuit against all 36 state governors, seeking full autonomy for local governments and prohibiting governors from unilaterally dissolving democratically elected local government leaders. The suit requests the Supreme Court to direct funds standing in the credits of local governments to be directly channeled from the federation account in accordance with the constitution. The Federal Government also seeks an order to stop governors from creating caretaker committees to run local governments instead of the constitutionally recognized and guaranteed democratically elected system.
