China's State Council appointed Hua Chunying as the country's Vice Foreign Minister on 27 May. Hua, born in 1970, has a background in European Affairs and has previously served in the Chinese Embassy in Singapore and the Chinese Mission to the EU. From 2012 to 2019, she served as the deputy director-general of the department of press, communication and public diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is the fifth female spokesperson for the Ministry. She was appointed Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs in October 2021.
