1948: South Park, Kansas school integration lawsuit preceded Brown v. Board of Education.

70 years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional in the landmark case Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas. Less well-known are the integration lawsuits that preceded Brown v. Board. In September 1948, South Park, Kansas welcomed a new school year, with only two students at Walker Elementary School, due to a heated lawsuit between the community and the local school board over major disparities between the Black and white schools.
