"Universal Language," a Persian and French-language film by Canadian director Matthew Rankin, won the first-ever Audience Award at Directors' Fortnight, a Cannes Film Festival event. This marks the first audience award at Cannes and the first introduced by Directors' Fortnight, a side program without a jury. The inaugural prize is worth €7,500 ($8,100).
