2023 saw a 5% decrease in registered births in the Republic of Ireland compared to 2022, with 54,678 births recorded, down from 57,540. The fertility rate now stands at 1.5 births per woman, just above the EU average, and the average age of all mothers remained at 33.2 years. The number of deaths in 2023 was 35,459, a decrease of 18 from the previous year, with cancer and circulatory diseases being the leading causes of death, accounting for 56.8% of deaths.
