In April 2024, Nigerian food prices surged, with rice prices rising 155.93% year-on-year to N1,399.34. Sweet potato saw the highest increase (182.04% YoY) followed by unripe plantain (168.29% YoY). The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported that other food items like white garri, tomato, beans, and yam also experienced significant price increases. This has led to Nigerians paying exorbitant amounts for essential foods.
