A child in Dedham, Essex has contracted Weil's disease, a rare infection, after swimming in the River Stour. Weil's disease, also known as leptospirosis, is a severe bacterial infection spread through the urine of infected animals such as rats, cows, pigs, dogs, and mice. It can enter the body through the mouth, eyes, or a cut. The Environment Agency is currently monitoring the river, and Dedham Parish Council is working with other agencies to improve river safety awareness.
