Canada and the US agreed to suspend fishing of Canadian-origin Yukon River Chinook salmon for seven years to protect and rebuild the species.

Canada and the US have agreed to suspend all fishing activities for Canadian-origin Yukon River Chinook salmon for seven years, starting from April 2024, to protect the dwindling species. This covers commercial, recreational, and domestic fishing and aims to rebuild the population to 71,000 Canadian-origin Chinook salmon by 2030. The suspension recognizes the persistent decline of Chinook salmon and the inability to meet conservation objectives in both countries. The governments will work on habitat and stock restoration activities and support research to better understand the declines of Chinook salmon.
