Saudi Arabia's Ma'aden extracts lithium from seawater in a pilot project, potentially disrupting battery metal supply industry.

Saudi Arabian Mining Company Ma'aden has reportedly extracted lithium from seawater through a pilot project, according to CEO Robert Wilt. Although not yet commercially viable, successful extraction from seawater could upend the battery metal supply industry, currently reliant on hard-rock mines in Australia and brines in South America. The world's oceans are estimated to contain 180 billion tonnes of lithium.
