Imperial Oil Ltd. has started production at its new Grand Rapids oil sands project located at its Cold Lake operating site. The Calgary-based company, majority owned by U.S. giant ExxonMobil, uses a combination of steam and chemical solvents to recover bitumen too deep for mining. This process is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% compared to their existing methods at Cold Lake.
