Tasmania's Ashley Youth Detention Centre, which was recommended for urgent closure in September due to child abuse risks, is currently housing 26 children, the highest number in at least a decade. Despite the recommendation, the state government has shifted the closure timetable to mid-2026 as part of justice reforms. The Children's Commissioner, Leanne McLean, has demanded a taskforce to reduce youth detainees at the centre.
