Caterpillar settles racial hiring discrimination allegations for $800,000, offering jobs to 34 affected individuals and revising hiring policies.

Heavy equipment manufacturer Caterpillar has agreed to pay $800,000 to settle allegations of systemic racial hiring discrimination against 60 Black job applicants at its factory in Decatur, Illinois. The U.S. Labor Department found that Caterpillar discriminated against Black applicants seeking work as welders from March 30, 2018, to March 30, 2020. Caterpillar will offer jobs to 34 of the affected individuals and has committed to revising its hiring policies and providing comprehensive anti-discrimination training to managers and supervisors involved in hiring decisions.
