A recent study by the Turbli portal, which analyzed 150,000 air routes, has identified the Santiago-Santa Cruz route in Chile and Bolivia as the most turbulent flight of all, followed by Tokyo-dominated long-haul services. Turbulence occurs when air streams traveling at different speeds meet, typically at jet stream boundaries, over mountains, and in certain cloud storms. The equator also experiences increased turbulence due to strong upward currents and thunderstorm activity.
