2023 UK Public Order Act expansion on police protest intervention power ruled unlawful by High Court.
The UK High Court has ruled that the 2023 Public Order Act, which expanded the UK police's power to intervene in protests as "serious disruption," was unlawful. Liberty, a campaign group, had brought legal action against the government, arguing that the new law lowered the threshold for what constitutes "serious disruption." The Home Office was found to have acted outside its powers and failed to carry out a fair consultation process. The government has been granted permission to appeal against the ruling.
