Small Irish farms (<€8,000 output) have lower environmental impact, report finds.
A new study by Teagasc reveals small Irish farms, defined as those with a standard output below €8,000, have low environmental impact. These farms, comprising around 48,000 of the country's 135,000 farms, occupy about 15% of the agricultural land area in Ireland and use approximately 13ha of land. The research showed that these small farms have lower nitrogen and phosphorus balances compared to larger farms, as well as lower greenhouse gas emissions due to their low stocking rate.
