NZTA Waka Kotahi decided on May 17 to maintain, but reduce subsidy for Te Huia train due to community pressure. Concerns have been raised regarding the burden on regional rate payers. The Public Transport Users Association and Campaign for Better Transport suggest alternative revenue sources for the Waikato Regional Council. Chair of PTUA, Niall Robertson, proposes Auckland Transport contribute to the subsidy and build a temporary station at Pokeno to increase fare box recovery.
